Parks Victoria will commence maintenance works on St Kilda Pier next week to reinforce a number of concrete crossheads to allow for continued service vehicle access by installing
horizontal steel beam bracing beneath the pier.
As the manager of over 40 piers and jetties around Port Phillip and Western Port, Parks Victoria continually monitors the condition of piers and programs regular maintenance and major works to ensure the continued safety and enjoyment of our bays and waterways.
Recent routine inspections of St Kilda Pier identified the need for Parks Victoria to carry out some short term maintenance works to continue access for service vehicles at the current loading ratings of 2.6t single axle and 5.3t dual axle.
“St Kilda Pier is not just one of Melbourne’s most loved piers. It’s an iconic part of Melbourne and one of our most popular tourism destinations.” said Parks Victoria Port Phillip Chief Ranger Graeme Davis.

“The maintenance works will ensure Melburnians and the many visitors who come to St. Kilda Pier each year can continue to enjoy the services of the St Kilda Pier Kiosk and access Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadrons marina based facilities.”
The works are not expected to require full pier closures however there may be temporary partial closures and restricted vehicle access. “Parks Victoria is working to ensure there is as little disruption to the public as possible during the works. There may be some minor disruptions however the pier will remain open to pedestrians throughout the works and the overall appearance of the pier will remain unchanged.” said Mr Davis.
Maintenance works will commence on Monday 21 November and are expected to be complete before Christmas, subject to favourable weather and conditions.
